Protecting Alabama Rivers and Your Pocketbook

More than once in my life I’ve been reminded there is no such thing as a free lunch. I first learned that lesson from my parents and you probably did, too. Everything has a cost to someone. Whether you’re handing money to a cashier directly or paying a higher utility rate because of government regulations, you will pay. That’s never been truer than in the current push to force the removal of coal ash from one location to another in Alabama.

Rural Broadband Access Powers Ahead
For years and years, those in rural areas have had a hit-and-miss experience with gaining Internet access. Some have limited, spotty service, while others have had no service at all.
To eradicate this problem, 18 organizations, led by EIA, joined forces to create the Alabama Rural Broadband Coalition, whose mission is to expand broadband access to everyone in the state, regardless of where they live.
Earlier this year, the ARBC drafted and ultimately passed legislation that would create a grants process administered by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs to award funds to underserved areas. So far, Gov. Ivey has awarded $1.14 million in grants to deserving entities for broadband expansion.
